Charity Auction
Australian livestock exporters have a proud history of digging deep to support worthy causes through the LIVEXchange gala dinner and charity auction. The beneficiaries are nominated by the hosting state chapter, this year the Northern Territory Livestock Exporters Association (NTLEA).
The 2022 charity auction raised almost $150,000.
Greg Smith Family Trust
Greg (Whippy) Smith was a livestock export industry stockperson who also worked for decades in Indonesia, supporting small farmers working with imported Australian cattle. He was involved in a wide range of projects for the industry in Indonesia, establishing feedlots, providing training, and conducting supply chain audits.
Greg passed away in April 2021 following an accident while discharging a vessel in Indonesia, leaving behind his wife, adult daughter and teenage sons Tristan and Brody. He was 59 years old. The Greg Smith Family Trust has been set up to support the ongoing education of the boys, including the opportunity to attend university if they wish.
Family of Seafarers Foundation
The Family of Seafarers Foundation has been established by the Mission to Seafarers Australia and exporter AUSTREX.
Seafarers, stockpeople and veterinarians make an important contribution to the livestock export trade, and it can be immensely painful for families on the rare occasion when tragedy strikes.
The foundation will provide support to families who have lost loved ones at sea who were working on livestock vessels which use Australian and New Zealand ports, including the families of the Gulf Livestock 1 which went missing in 2020.
